Frequently Asked Questions

What is a transponder key?

A key with a small chip in the plastic head. When you turn the ignition, the car's immobilizer challenges the chip; no valid response, no start — the engine cranks but never fires, or starts and dies in two seconds. Nearly every vehicle built since the early 2000s uses one.

Why won't my hardware-store key copy start my car?

The kiosk or counter duplicated the metal blade but not the chip, so the door opens and the cylinder turns while the immobilizer still blocks the engine. We either clone your working chip onto the copy or program the new key directly to the vehicle — both are quick mobile jobs.

How much does a transponder key cost in Arlington?

Cloning a chip onto a new key while you still have a working original typically runs $85-$160. Programming a new transponder key from scratch runs $120-$250 for most domestic and Asian vehicles in the DFW market. All-keys-lost situations cost more because the immobilizer has to be accessed directly.

Can you make a transponder key if I lost every key?

Yes — that is our all-keys-lost service. We generate the mechanical cut by code, then program a fresh transponder through the OBD port or, on some models, directly at the immobilizer module. See the All Keys Lost page for how that works and what it costs.
